Medieval Scotland Links

One of my writer resources came up with these sites for info on Medieval Scotland. They look great.

This one is great because it features a collection of articles for costumers, and it includes information about hair and hats: http://www.virtue.to/articles/

Wikipedia, of course, has a nice page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1200-1300_in_fashion

Medieval Scotland is worth poking around on for a whole host of info: http://medievalscotland.org/

The Costumer’s Manifesto has a ton of links that might prove useful: http://www.costumes.org/History/100pages/medievalinks.htm

Clothing of the Medieval Scottish Highlands is good too: http://www.marariley.net/celtic/SentToKass/Scotland.htm

Save The Words

Save the Words is an online Ouija board that brings dead nouns, verbs, and
adjectives to life.

Each of the words you’ll find here was once a living, breathing part of our
language. Roll your cursor over it, and it’ll cry out: “Over here!” or “Yo!
Pick me!” Click, and you’ll see a succinct definition, an example sentence,
and an invitation to use the word you’ve picked in your everyday
conversation and correspondence. Some words are especially challenging: Good
luck to anyone who chooses urette (it means “dried animal urine absorbed
into chalky soil”). Others, like boreism (“behavior of a boring person”),
are so utible (“useful”) you’ll wonder why they went away in the first
place.

Happy St Patrick's Day!

GO TO 7TRUE.COM
7TRUE.COM

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was not actually Irish. He was born on March 17 around AD 385, somewhere in Roman Britain, possibly near Dumbarton, Scotland. At 16, he was captured by Irish raiders looking for slaves and he was taken there to tend sheep. After six years of slavery, he ran away and ended up wandering through southern Gaul (France) and Italy. There, he had a vision from God which told him to return to Ireland and convert the pagans to Christianity. Returning to Ireland around 432, St. Patrick did missionary work until he died in 464. The country of Ireland went into mourning. The first St. Patrick's Day celebration in the United States was in 1737 in Boston.

St. Patrick's Day, commemorating his death on this day c 461-492 AD.

You all have a great day and remember to party hard but be safe! We don't want to lose you!

Sale of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Trade Moving Ahead
by Jim Milliot & Judith Rosen
The sale of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s trade and reference group is steadily moving forward with the one remaining stumbling block price. HMH had no comment on the report, but sources said there are four serious bidders for the group, including Hachette--widely thought to have been the early favorite--Random House, a group led by a former HM executive Wendy Strothman who has the backing of private equity firm, and an independent publishing house.

Drummound Talks Google Settlement at AAP Meeting
by Jim Milliot
When the authors and publishers filed their lawsuits against Google more than three years ago, “not in my wildest dreams did I think we’d end up where we did,” said Google senior v-p for corporate development & chief legal officer David Drummound, who was invited to talk about the settlement between the parties at Wednesday’s AAP annual meeting. Drummound said Google resisted the idea of “pushing a legal point to a conclusion,” and rather than see fair use vindicated in court, decided it was more important to take advantage of the opportunity to find an agreement that could benefit the world. According to Drummound, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin had always thought it would be necessary to scan books if the search engine they were creating was to be truly world class, and said that the agreement moves Google toward that goal quickly.

Filkins, Bolaño Among 2009 National Book Critics Circle Award Winners
By Craig Morgan Teicher
The National Book Critics Circle gave out its annual awards at a well-attended ceremony at The New School in New York City on March 12. Despite much commentary from the presenters and winners about folding stand-alone book reviews and the uncertain shift from print to digital for both books and book reviews, the NBCC celebrated books, reading and the art of book criticism.

Ron Charles, of the Washington Post (which recently announced the closure of its stand-alone book review), winner of the NBCC’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing, made particularly pointed comments in his alternately hilarious and earnest acceptance speech. He noted that the New York Times Book Review is the last stand-alone review left, though, he said, its editors "won't return my calls." Giving shrinking space for book review, Charles also urged reviewers to pick the books they review carefully and to pick books they can celebrate. There were no major upsets among the winners, though there was an unprecedented tie for the poetry award, which NBCC board member Rigoberto Gonzales said "has never happened before and will never happen again."

Deep Point of View: Why It's Important For You and Your Readers

Dates: April 6-19, 2009
Instructor: Laurie Sanders, Editor, Black Velvet Seductions
Cost: FREE to FTHRW members; $15.00 for all others
Registration Deadline: April 1, 2009

Course Description:

If you've received a rejection letter or your entries have scored low in writing contests or reviewers are not taken with your published books there is a strong likelihood that the culprit is a shallow point of view.

Join Black Velvet Seductions founder and Editor-in-Chief Laurie Sanders for an in depth look at deep point of view. Laurie will share insights about what readers (and editors) really want when they buy fiction and will show you through examples, exercises and feedback how to incorporate this important element into your work. In this workshop we will look beyond the basics of viewpoint and examine why it is such an important tool and how to use the deeper nuances of viewpoint to add emotion, texture, motivation, conflict, and drama to a manuscript.

At the end of this hands on workshop you will know what deep point of view is, why it is important to editors and readers. You will be able to spot shallow point of view in your own manuscript and will have the knowledge and skills necessary to deepen the point of view in your own work. This knowledge and skill will inoculate you against one of the most common reasons editors reject manuscripts and readers abandon authors.

About the Instructor:

Laurie Sanders is the founder and Editor-in-Chief at Black Velvet Seductions Publishing. She writes and lectures frequently on the use of deep point of view as the lack of deep point of view in the manuscripts she receives is the most common reason for rejections at her firm.

This 'n That

Did you know...

Spilling salt is considered bad luck, probably because
it was once so valuable. Superstition has it a person is
doomed to shed as many tears as it takes to dissolve the
spilled salt.

Evil spirits can't harm you when you stand inside a circle.

Suspend a wedding band over the palm of the pregnant girl.
If the ring swings in a circular motion it will be a girl.
If the ring swings in a straight line the baby will be a
boy.

A knife as a gift from a lover means that the love will
soon end.

If you use the same pencil to take a test that you used
for studying for the test, the pencil will remember the
answers.

The number of Xs in the palm of your right hand is the
number of children you will have.

You must hold your breath while going past a cemetery or
you will breathe in the spirit of someone who has recently
died.
